Completed in 2022, this transformative project at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) revitalized the iconic 32-meter-high atrium and aging glazed roof at Zone C - a key campus entrance since 1990. Tasked with MBIS compliance and minimal disruption to daily activities, our firm delivered innovative solutions to enhance safety, sustainability, and functionality.
A primary achievement was the design of a steel cat-walk structure crowned by a vertical rain screen above the glazed roof, providing secure maintenance access while shielding the concourse below from rainfall. We integrated a green roof with photovoltaic panels to harness renewable energy, aligning with HKUST’s sustainability goals. For the bustling atrium below, a temporary elevated working platform ensured public safety during construction without interrupting campus life.
Comprehensively, we renovated the defective steel truss system, replaced glazed panels, and reinforced structural integrity. The 2,220m² space-hosting exhibitions, congregations, and performances - now stands future-proofed, blending heritage with modern engineering excellence within the HK$27.5M budget.
